Beynac apparaît comme un incroyable jaillissement de pierre où se mêlent harmonieusement les créations de la nature et celles des hommes. Blotti sous la haute falaise blonde, protégé par le plus beau château fort du département, le village profite également de la présence bienveillante de la Dordogne. Parce que Beynac est aussi un don du fleuve qui a toujours su féconder la plaine, alimenter son petit port de commerce, enrichir la table ou les caisses des seigneurs avec pêcheries et péages...
Des tumultes du passé, Beynac n'en conserve aujourd'hui que les traces qui évoquent l'intensité de la vie de ses habitants. Les artistes qui s'y sont installés, comme Paul Eluard, ne se sont pas trompés : il émerge d'ici un rare sentiment d'éternité. Nous vous invitons à le partager.

The village seems to spring out of the very stone, a harmonious fusion of the works of both nature and man. Clinging to its huge golden cliff, protected by the greatest castle in the entire department, it is equally blessed by the benevolent waters of the river at its foot.
Since the mists of time, the Dordogne has irrigated the fields, brought trade to its small river port, and enriched the table and the purses of the local lords through its fisheries and the tolls they could exact.
Today, Beynac shows few signs of the intensity of life for its inhabitants during its tumultuous past. But the artists who stayed there in later years, such as Paul Eluard, were not mistaken. They emerged with a rare sense of eternity. We invite you to share it.

Écrivain et ancien rédacteur en chef de plusieurs périodiques britanniques, sa voix a aussi été longtemps familière aux auditeurs de la BBC World. Installé depuis 20 ans à la Roque-Gageac, il continue à écrire, particulièrement sur les vins, l'histoire et l'environnement de notre région.
Romain Bondonneau
Après un 3e cycle d'histoire et d'archéologie, il enseigne au lycée de Sarlat et préside l'association Périgord Patrimoines. Il participa à plusieurs publications sur l'écologie ou l'histoire de la Dordogne et dirige la collection des petits guides bilingues sur les villages remarquables du Périgord (La Roque-Gageac, paru en 2007).

Author, former editor, and long a familiar voice to listeners to the BBC World Service. Has lived at La Roque-Gageac for nearly 20 years, writing in particular about the wines of the region, as well as environmental questions, local history, and various other topics.
Romain Bondonneau
After taking a higher degree in history and archaeology, he now teaches at the lycée in Sarlat and is president of the Périgord Heritage association. He has contributed to several publications on the ecology and history of the Dordogne and is editing a collection of small bilingual guides to notable villages in the Périgord (La Roque-Gageac, published in 2007).
