Ce cinquième volume de la collection « Car Racing » révèle une année d'audace sportive et industrielle mais aussi de contestation.
Les luttes sont farouches qui voient s'opposer Ferrari et Ford, Matra et Brabham, Lotus et autre McLaren tandis qu'émerge un autre rival de taille, Porsche. Tous ces véritables combats comblent les photographes de l'agence DPPI à laquelle la presse nationale et désormais internationale a confié mission de ne rien manquer de ces confrontations au sommet.
1969 est aussi l'année où émerge une tension d'une autre nature. Au même mois de juin, deux pilotes montent au créneau, faisant émerger la question de la sécurité. « Je suis payé pour gagner, pas pour mourir » : Jackie Stewart a donné le ton lors du Grand Prix de Belgique dont il contestait la sécurité pour les pilotes. Une semaine plus tard au Mans, Jacky Ickx pointant les risques associés au départ couru décide de marcher tranquillement jusqu'à sa voiture - ce qui ne l'empêchera pas de remporter la course. Contestations suivies d'effets : le départ des 24 Heures reviendra à une formule classique et le Grand Prix de Belgique sera rayé du calendrier.
Tous ces moments exaltants sont ici restitués par la couleur, de plus en plus présente depuis que les photographes s'en sont emparés pour leur grand plaisir.
This fifth volume of the Car Racing collection brings to life a year of daring sportsmanship and industrial prowess, but also ringing challenges.
Fierce struggles pitted Ferrari and Ford, Matra and Brabham, Lotus and others against McLaren, even as a new rival, Porsche, gained strength. These pitched battles were manna for the photographers front DPPI, to whom the national - and henceforth international - press entrusted the task of missing not a moment of these monumental confrontations.
1969 was also the year that tensions of a different sort made their appearance. In the month of June, two different drivers took a stand, raising the question of security. With his I'm paid to win, no to die, Jackie Stewart set the tone at the Belgian Grand Prix, protesting on behalf of drivers' safety. A week later, at Le Mans, Jacky Ickx highlighted the risks associated with the run and pump start by strolling-serenely to his car - a choice that nowise prevented him from winning the race. These protests were effective in driving action : the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans subsequently returned to standard and the Belgian Grand Prix was dropped from the racing calendar.
At these extraordinary moments are rendered here in living colour, that gamed traction as photographers seized upon its capabilities with delight.
