Pour le grand public, Dominique Perrault surgit sur la scène architecturale à la fin des années 1980, avec l'édification de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Ce projet colossal, dans lequel il se lance après un début de carrière prometteur qui le voit accumuler les constructions ambitieuses (l'ESIEE, l'hôtel industriel Berlier, l'usine pour la Sagep, entre autres), lui ouvre en grand les portes de l'international. Après l'Allemagne, l'Autriche, l'Espagne, l'agence Dominique Perrault Architecture, qui s'appuie aujourd'hui sur trente années d'innovations techniques et de recherches sur les matériaux, livre des bâtiments aux États-Unis, en Russie et en Asie.
Depuis l'usine Someloir, réalisé à 27 ans, jusqu'au néobaroque Théâtre Mariinsky II, mais également à travers nombre d'études et de projets imaginés pour des concours, l'architecte a su faire évoluer ses conceptions, en les ancrant dans une vision urbaine détachée des discours historicistes. La transformation des territoires, la dynamique unissant l'architecture à son environnement, la disparition des frontières traditionnelles, ou encore la question du rôle de l'édifice dans la cité, sont quelques-uns des axes majeurs de sa réflexion.
À l'heure où s'achève la réalisation d'importants programmes internationaux, comme la Cour de justice des Communautés européennes à Luxembourg, l'hôtel Habitat Sky à Barcelone, ou l'université Ewha à Séoul, cet ouvrage monographique - qui présente plus de soixante projets - retrace les lignes de force d'une architecture polyphonique magnifiant les contextes où elle s'inscrit.
Dominique Perrault surged onto the architectural scene and into the public eye at the end of the 1980s with the building of the National Library of France. He undertook this colossal project after a promising early career during which he built a number of ambitious constructions (including the ESIEE, the Berlier Industrial Hotel and the Sagep factory). After the Library, the gates to the international arena were wide open. Germany, Austria and Spain soon followed. Today, Dominique Perrault Architecture, which boasts thirty years of achievements in technical innovation and materials research, has further expanded its scope and delivers buildings in the United States, Russia and Asia.
From the Someloir factory, built when he was 27 years old, to the Neo-Baroque Mariinsky II Theater, and through a multitude of studies and projects developed for competitions, the architect has continuously evolved his work by anchoring it in urban vision detached from historicist discourse. The transformation of territories, the dynamic that binds architecture with its environment, the disappearance of traditional boundaries and the question of the role of the edifice in the city, are among his major avenues of exploration.
As a number of important international programs are approaching completion, including the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg, the Habitat Sky Hotel in Barcelona and Ewha University in Seoul, this monograph - presenting over sixty projects - retraces the development of the main concepts underpinning this polyphonic architecture that exalts the contexts into which it is inscribed.
