In 1962, the artist Farid Belkahia, on his return from Europe where he studied in Paris and in Prague, took the helm of the Casablanca School of Fine Arts. He began on this occasion a seminal artistic experience and careful analysis of the new paths to modernity.

In 1964, wishing to be surrounded by a team sharing his vision, Farid Belkahia called on two Moroccan artists, Mohamed Melehi and Mohamed Chabaa, as well as on two art historians, Toni Maraini from Italy and Bert Flint from the Netherlands. These historic figures were well-acquainted with modern artistic practices in post-war Europe and Northern America. Together, they would implement at the Casablanca School of Fine Arts an innovative teaching method based on the reappropriation of traditional arts and their revival, in orderto generate a modern artistic creation rooted in local culture, free from academic artistic practices and open to the world.

Through this shared educational experience, an aesthetic community, called the « Casablanca group », would devise the Moroccan postcolonial artistic modernity.

This multi-author book is published thanks to the Farid Belkahia Foundation following the exhibition Farid Belkahia and the Casablanca School of Fine Arts, 1962-1974 shown at his Mathaf museum in Marrakesh (Morocco) in 2018.
