Aventures en mer des Caraïbes

Voilà plus de trois cents ans que la mer des Caraïbes n'avait plus connu d'expéditions en pirogues de mer. À l'origine, les Kali'ña du bassin de l'Orénoque ainsi que les Kalinago installés dans les îles construisaient des embarcations de taille exceptionnelle à partir d'un seul arbre, pour naviguer en haute mer, à quelque soixante guerriers. Depuis leur disparition, construire une kanawa - ce mot est à l'origine du terme canoë -, apprendre à se déplacer à la force de la pagaie d'île en île, c'était un rêve un peu fou. Des hommes et des femmes de tous horizons se sont engagés dans un vaste projet autour de la navigation précolombienne. Ce récit est celui de cette aventure. Elle s'est lancée sur la curiosité et la volonté de partage. Elle est depuis lors portée par une soif d'enrichissement culturel attaché à l'héritage amérindien dans les sociétés caribéennes d'aujourd'hui.

Le texte illustré de nombreuses photographies, de cartes et de schémas techniques offre à connaître, à voir et à ressentir. Riche de l'observation scientifique et des témoignages écrits des pagayeurs, il emporte le lecteur depuis l'arbre creusé à l'herminette jusqu'aux creux de mer dans l'orage, vers de nouveaux horizons.

« Koudmen pa ka ba mal ren, kolé tché, alô kolé tèt, kolé zépol », autrement dit l'entraide salutaire ne donne pas le mal de dos, alors mettons en synergie rêves, compétences et énergies.

Tel est le leitmotiv de Karisko - la KARayib, 4 000 ans d'IStoire au KOtidien - une initiative citoyenne pédagogique, économique, projective et festive, vectrice de développement et d'épanouissement, labellisée « Projet d'éducation populaire ».

Créée officiellement le 10 décembre 2004 sous l'impulsion de Marcel Rapon, concepteur et réalisateur de ses programmes, Karisko est une association loi 1901 comptant une quarantaine de membres adhérents et plus de cinq cents sympathisants, hommes et femmes, tant en Martinique que dans la Caraïbe et dans le monde. Le véritable point commun de cette équipe réside dans le « Koudmen » - ce bénévolat militant basé sur le collectif qu'elle met en oeuvre pour donner à ce projet toute la crédibilité sociale, culturelle et économique qu'exige son ambition.

Caribbean Sea Adventures

It has been more than three hundred years since sea pirogue expeditions had last been known In the Caribbean Sea. Originally, the Kali'ña people of the Orinoco basin, as well as the Kalinago settled in the islands, built boats of exceptional size from a single tree. These vessels, accommodating some sixty warriors, were used to navigate the high seas. Since their disappearance, building a kanawa-this word is the root of the term « canoe »-and learning to travel by paddle force from island to island was a slightly crazy dream. Men and women from all walks of life embarked on a vast project based on pre- Columbian navigation. This story relates this adventure. It was launched out of curiosity and from a desire to share. Since then, it has been borne by a thirst for cultural enrichment tied to the Amerindian heritage in the Caribbean societies of today.

The text, illustrated with numerous photographs, maps, and technical diagrams, offers readers the possibility to learn, see, and experience. Offering a wealth of scientific observation and the paddlers' written accounts, it takes readers from the tree dug out with an adze to the crests of the waves during a storm, toward new horizons.

« Koudmen pa ka ba mal ren, kolé tché, alô kolé tèt, kolé zépol, in other words, » mutual aid does not give back pain, so let's collaborate to put dreams, skills, and energies in synergy.

This is the leitmotiv of Karisko - the KARayib, 4 000 years of IStory KOtidian - a pedagogical, economic, projective, and festive civil initiative, conveyor of development and fulfilment, labeled « Popular Education Project. »

Officially created on December 10, 2004 under the impetus of Marcel Rapon, designer and director of its programs, Karisko is a non-profit organization with about forty active members and more than 500 supporters, men and women, in Martinique as well as in the Caribbean and around the world. The true common point of this team lies in the « koudmen » - activist voluntary work based on the collective, which the organization implements to give this project all the social, cultural, and economic credibility requisite to its ambition.

Biographie

Marcel Rapon est le fondateur de l'association Karisko. Labellisée par la direction de la Jeunesse et des Sports « Projet jeunesse et éducation populaire », l'association s'investit dans la redécouverte et le partage du patrimoine historique et environnemental. Le projet Kanawa est porté depuis la Martinique par Karisko et par une recherche pilotée par Benoît Bérard, professeur d'archéologie précolombienne à l'université des Antilles, auteur de nombreux ouvrages et articles scientifiques. Thierry L'Étang, anthropologue, s'est intéressé à l'étude des cultes afro-caribéens comme à celle des cultures amérindiennes des Antilles ; ancien chef de projet du Mémorial ACTe de Pointe-à-Pître, il est actuellement rédacteur en chef des Cahiers du Patrimoine, revue de la collectivité territoriale de Martinique.

Marcel Rapon is the founder of the Karisko non-profit organization. Officially supported by the state as a « Youth and Education Project, » Karisko is involved in the rediscovery and sharing of historical and environmental heritage. The Kanawa project was carried out in Martinique by Karisko and by a research team led by Benoît Bérard, professor of pre-Columbian archaeology at the Université des Antilles, author of numerous books and scientific articles. Thierry L'Étang is an anthropologist with an interest in the study of Afro-Caribbean cults and Amerindian cultures of the Antilles. The former project manager of the Memorial ACTe in Pointe-à-Pître, he is currently editor-in-chief of the Cahiers du Patrimoine, a review published by the Martinique regional government.
