La collection « Ateliers d'artistes » a pour objet d'introduire le lecteur au coeur de la création de l'artiste : vivre le travail de celui qui invente des formes et des objets, en suivre la démarche, apprendre à lire son oeuvre représente la plus précieuse et la plus difficile des entreprises. C'est ce que propose chacun des livres de cette collection. Abondamment illustrés, ils dévoilent l'atmosphère d'un atelier ou d'un lieu autour d'entretiens qui restituent la pensée de l'artiste, peintre ou sculpteur.
The collection Ateliers d'artistes introduces the reader to the locus of artistic creativity. Each of the books in this collection is an invitation to the rigorous and inspiring pursuit of learning how to read an oeuvre by observing the artist at work in the process of inventing forms and objects. Within each « Atelier d'artiste, » numerous photographs revealing the atmosphere of a studio or site surround a conversation reflecting the painter or sculptor's thoughts.
Jean Le Gac, peintre français né en 1936, fait partie des artistes des années soixante-dix qui ont changé les catégories admises : il utilise les murs d'exposition comme les pages d'un grand livre illustré et ouvert. Se présentant comme un artiste romanesque, il a introduit, pense-t-il, le temps de l'imparfait, il était une fois, et le terme fiction dans les arts plastiques, apparu plus tard en littérature sous le vocable « autofiction ». Mais, à la différence du livre, il réalise, pour son personnage « le Peintre », les oeuvres qu'il expose et commente... Il a exposé à la Biennale Internationale d'art de Venise (Pavillon Français 1972, Pavillon International 1976, Pavillon International 1980) et à la Documenta de Kassel (Documenta V, Documenta VI).
Jean Le Gac, french painter, born in 1936, is ranked as one of the artists of the 70's who pushed the boundaries of art : He uses the exhibition walls as the pages of an open, large illustrated book. Calling himself an artist of the novel, he believes he has introduced the imperfect tense, once upon a time, and the word « fiction » to visual arts, later to be reformulated as « autofiction » in literature. But, unlike the author of a book, he produces paintings for his persona, the Painter, that he exhibits and annotates... His work was selected for the Venice Biennial in 1972 (French Pavillon), 1976 and 1980 (International Pavilion). He has also participated in Documenta V and VI, in Kassel.
