Le XVIIIe congrès mondial de l'Union Internationale des Sciences Préhistoriques et Protohistoriques (Paris, 4-9 juin 2018) a permis de publier un état de nos connaissances, quarante ans après celui du IXe congrès UISPP de Nice en 1976. Le 1er volume, La Préhistoire de la France, dirigé par F. Djindjian, porte sur des chapitres généraux et les périodes paléolithiques et mésolithiques. Le 2e, La Protohistoire de la France, dirigé par J. Guilaine et D. Garcia, couvre le Néolithique, l'âge du Bronze et l'âge du Fer.
Depuis quarante ans, l'archéologie s'est professionnalisée avec le développement des enseignements dans les universités, de la recherche au CNRS et l'essor de l'archéologie préventive. Grâce à la multidisciplinarité avec les sciences exactes, les sciences humaines, les sciences de la terre et les sciences de l'ingénieur, les méthodes et les techniques de l'archéologie ont rendu les reconstitutions plus complètes et plus fiables. La préhistoire ancienne a ainsi pu préciser la chronologie des premiers peuplements depuis un million d'années et ses adaptations aux changements climatiques, reconstituer les paysages quaternaires, établir la systématique et l'éthologie des espèces animales, et reconstituer les composantes techniques, économiques, sociales et artistiques des sociétés de chasseurs-cueilleurs (Neandertal, Sapiens). Ce livre résume nos connaissances sur le peuplement de la France depuis les origines jusqu'à il y a 7 000 ans.
The XVIIIth World Congress of the International Union for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences, which took place in Paris, from June 4 to 9 2018, was an opportunity to publish a new state of the art in Prehistory and Protohistory in France, forty years after the volume of the IXth UISPP Congress in Nice (1976). The present book is published in two volumes. The first volume (The Prehistory of France), directed by F. Djindjian, is dedicated to general chapters and to the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods. The second volume (The Protohistory of France), directed by J. Guilaine and D. Garcia, is dedicated to the Neolithic period, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
For the past forty years, archaeology has become increasingly professionalized thanks to its growing presence in curriculum and research at University and CNRS, and thanks to the boom of preventive archaeology. Its multidisciplinary extent across the humanities and hard sciences, especially earth science and engineering science, has dramatically improved the scope of archaeological investigations, making its reconstructions more accurate and reliable. Early prehistory is now able to clarify the chronology of the first human settlements in France over a million years and better understand the ways they adapted to climate change. It is now able to identify landscapes from the Quaternary, define the ethology of animal species in a systemic way, reconstruct the technical, economical, social and artistic components of hunter-gatherer societies (Neanderthal, Sapiens). This first volume offers an updated insight into human settlements in France from their beginnings until 7000 years ago.
François Djindjian est archéologue, spécialiste du paléolithique supérieur ainsi que de la théorie et des méthodes de l'archéologie. Il a enseigné comme professeur à l'Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Membre du bureau de l'UISPP, il est aussi vice-président du Conseil international pour la philosophie et les sciences humaines (CIPSH, Unesco).
François Djindjian is archaeologist, specialist of the upper Palaeolithic as well as the theory and methods of archaeology. He taught as a professor at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne. Member of the bureau of the International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences (UISPP), he is also vice president of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH, Unesco).
