C'est en 1998, avec The Art of Pleasure, que Taschen a fait découvrir au monde l'art remarquable de Touko Laaksonen. Avant cela, Laaksonen, alias Tom of Finland, artiste culte de la communauté gay internationale, était pratiquement inconnu du grand public.
En 2009, Taschen poursuit l'entreprise avec l'ouvrage ultime retraçant l'oeuvre de Tom, Tom of Finland XXL, une magnifique édition collector grand format réunissant plus de 1 000 illustrations et couvrant soixante ans de carrière de l'artiste. Son oeuvre a été réuni avec l'aide de la Tom of Finland Foundation, à partir de collections conservées aux États-Unis et en Europe, et comporte de nombreux dessins, peintures et études préparatoires qui n'avaient encore jamais été publiés. In 1998, Taschen introduced the world to the masterful art of Touko Laaksonen with The Art of Pleasure. Prior to that, Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland, enjoyed an intense cult following in the international gay community but was largely unknown to a broader audience.
In 2009, Taschen followed up with the ultimate Tom overview : Tom of Finland XXL, a beautiful big collector's edition with over 1,000 images, covering six decades of the artist's career. The work was gathered from collections across the United States and Europe with the help of the Tom of Finland Foundation, featuring many drawings, paintings, and sketches never previously reproduced. Other images had only been seen out of context and were finally presented in the sequential order Tom intended for full artistic appreciation and erotic impact.
The elegant oversized volume showed the full range of Tom's talent, from sensitive portraits to frank sexual pleasure to tender expressions of love and haunting tributes to young men struck down by Aids, and was completed by eight commissioned essays on Tom's social and personal impact by Camille Paglia, John Waters, Armistead Maupin, Todd Oldham, and others, plus a scholarly analysis of individual drawings by art historian Edward Lucie-Smith.
The only thing missing from Tom of Finland XXL was a widely affordable price tag-until now. The new Tom of Finland XXL is still big enough to work your biceps, and includes all of the original content, but costs a fraction of the original price. You're welcome.

Als Taschen 1998 The Art of Pleasure von Tom of Finland, bürgerlich Touko Laaksonen, herausbrachte, war Tom au(...)erhalb der Schwulenszene praktisch unbekannt. The Art of Pleasure änderte das grundlegend und vergrö(...)erte seine Fangemeinde schlagartig um ein Vielfaches.
2009 folgte mit Tom of Finland XXL der ultimate Überblick über Toms Schaffen, eine limitierte Collector's Edition mit weit mehr als 1.000 Bildern aus sechs Jahrzehnten seiner Karriere. Er wurde mit Unterstützung der Tom of Finland Foundation zusammengestellt und enthielt zahlreiche Zeichnungen, Gemälde und Skizzen, die niemals zuvor abgedruckt wurden. Andere Bilder wurden erstmals in der von Tom bestimmten Reihenfolge präsentiert, sodass sie ihre erotische Wirkung voll entfalten konnten.
Der Band im Gro(...)format zeigte die gesamte Bandbreite von Toms Talent - von sensiblen Porträts über ungehemmte Fleischeslust bis hin zu bewegenden Hommagen an junge Männer, die von Aids dahingerafft worden waren. Vervollständigt wurde die Dokumentation durch acht eigens in Auftrag gegebene Essays von Camille Paglia, John Waters, Armistead Maupin, Todd Oldham und anderen, sowie eine wissenschaftliche Analyse einzelner Zeichnungen durch den Kunsthistoriker Edward Lucie-Smith.
Alles, was zum Höhepunkt noch fehlte, war ein kleiner Preis für die gro(...)en Knüppel - bis jetzt ! Diese ungekürzte Neuauflage von Tom of Finland XXL ist immer noch schwer genug, um Muskelmasse anzutrainieren, rei(...)t aber kein Loch mehr in den Geldbeutel. Bitte, danke, gern geschehen !
Edward Lucie-Smith est né en 1933 à Kingston, en Jamaïque, et a fait ses études à Oxford. Il a publié plus de cent ouvrages, dont La Sexualité dans l'art occidental et Latin American Art of the 20th Century.
Camille Anna Paglia est l'auteur de six ouvrages, dont Sexual Personae : Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson, une analyse révolutionnaire de l'ambiguïté sexuelle dans l'art et la littérature. Elle enseigne actuellement dans le département des sciences humaines et des médias de l'University of the Arts de Philadelphie.
Armistead Maupin est l'auteur des Chroniques de San Francisco qui ont d'abord paru dans le San Francisco Chronicle en 1976, avant d'être publiées sous forme de roman en six volumes, dont trois ont été adaptés en une mini-série pour la télévision.
