Yan Pei-Ming

Yan Pei-Ming

In the name of the father

Like a modem echo to its famous masterpiece, the Isenheim Altarpiece by Grünewald, the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar is putting on a major new exhibition devoted to internationally renowned contemporary painter Yan Pei-Ming, whose spirit and Work arc bound up with the same themes of filiation, the sacred and sacrifice that were addressed by the German artist five centuries ago.

' Yan Pei-Ming - In the name of the father ' invites visitors to explore four decades of art via an outstanding selection of sixty major Works from public institutions and private collections. the exhibition and accompanying catalogue analyse Yan Pei-Ming's perception of himself and his practice, evoking his stylistic development and position in the history of art. Dominated by portraits and self-portraits, Yan Pei-Ming's Work interrogates his relation to his origins through the figures of Mao, Buddha, and his own father and mother, as well as through his 'international landscapes' and Shanghai scenes.

(Pandemic), a brand new work being displayed for the first time here, was painted specially for the occasion. The artist conceived it as a contemporary pendant of the Crucifixion in the Isenheim Altarpiece :' I wanted to produce a universal painting that would stand the test of time, a painting equal to the situation ... It will speak to anyone who has lived through this pandemic, while testifying to our present times for future generations. I don't see visitors coming out of the exhibition unscathed. That is the power of painting.'
