Circumnavigation de Magellan
Le choix d'une projection polaire pour cette carte met en valeur la longueur et l'ampleur de l'expédition menée par Magellan tout autour de la Terre : sur les cinq navires embarquant 237 hommes et contournant l'Amérique du Sud pour rejoindre l'océan Pacifique, seule la nef victoria revint à bon port le 6 septembre 1522 avec 18 hommes à bord et 533 quintaux de clous de girofle. Magellan lui-même mourut sur l'île de Mactan aux Philippines en avril 1521. Ce premier tour du Monde en navigation fut réalisé en 1080 jours. Dans les dessins qui illustrent la carte, Heinrich Scherer ajoute des allusions aux missions évangélisatrices jésuites qui motivèrent en partie les grandes expéditions entreprises au XVIe Siècle.
Magellan's Circumnavigation
The North Polar projection of this map emphasises the perilous scope of Magellan's expedition around the Globe : out of the five ships and 237 sailors that skirted the coasts of South America toward the pacific, only one vessel and 18 men returned home safely. On September 6th 1522, 1080 days after it first set sail, the Victoria arrived in Spain bearing 533 quintals of cloves. The father of the first circumnavigation, Magellan Himself, died on the island of Mactan in the Philippines over a year before the Victoria ever reached Spanish waters. Illustrations added to the map by Heinrich Scherer allude to the evangelical missions of the Jesuits, which catalyzed many expeditions of the 16th Century.
