I sent a work that I painted in Le Havre to [the exhibition in Boulevard des Capucines in April 1874]. It's a view frorn my window, with the sun in the mist and, in the foreground, some ships' masts... I was asked to provide a title for the catalogue. But the work couldn't really be considered as a view of Le Havre itself. « Well, » I said, « let's make it Impression ». So it became « impressionism », and the quip did the rounds.
