Ant Farm
Entre 1968 et 1978, Ant Farm (Doug Michels, Chip Lord, Curtis Schreier) met en scène la culture américaine, ses obsessions consuméristes, la nouvelle société de communication à travers vidéos, performances, installations. En 1974, Ant Farm réalise une des oeuvres les plus marquantes de l'histoire de l'art du XXe siècle avec Cadillac Ranch, près de la mythique Route 66 à Amarillo dans le Texas. En 1975, Media Burn, à la fois performance et vidéo, est le choc frontal des deux icônes de la culture américaine que sont la voiture et la télévision. La même année, la vidéo The Eternal Frame (Le cadre éternel) rejoue l'assassinat de Kennedy, première tragédie à n'exister qu'à travers l'image. Les projets d'Ant Farm relèvent ainsi autant de pratiques artistiques conceptuelles que d'architecture, de théâtre ou d'écriture par leur dimension narrative qui interroge la nature médiatique de l'image.
Ant Farm
From 1968 to 1978, Ant Farm (Doug Michels, Chip Lord and Curtis Schreier) put American culture on stage, spotlighting its consumer obsessions and the new communication society in videos, performances and installations. In 1974, Ant Farm created one of the most epochal works of the history of 20th century art with « Cadillac Ranch », beside the mythic Route 66 near Amarillo, Texas. In 1975, « Media Burn », both a performance and a video, was a staged head-on collision of two icons of American culture : the car and the television. Also that year, their video, « The Eternal Frame », is an endless reenactment of the Kennedy assassination, the first tragedy to exist only through images. Thus, Ant Farm's projects are as much an expression of conceptual artistic practice as architecture, and of theater or writing in their narrative dimension. Through them, Ant Farm questions the nature of the image as perceived through the filter of the media.
