Les clichés des Becher se livrent comme les fiches signalétiques d'un catalogue de bâtiments industriels désaffectés regroupant sous forme de planches des tours de refroidissement, des châteaux d'eau, des gazomètres, des hauts-fourneaux,... Cet inventaire du patrimoine industriel constitue autant de « typologies » dans la tradition des maîtres allemands de la photographie objective. Même si son iconographie couvre une large période, allant de la fin des années 1960 à la fin des années 1970, Typologies anciennes revient sur un moment de l'oeuvre. Les planches photographiques présentées dans ce livre ont été présentées pour la première fois à la 14e Biennale Internationale de São Paulo, en 1977.
The Bechers' pictures can be compared to identification sheets in a catalogue of disused industrial buildings, presenting in the form of illustration plates a series of cooling towers, water towers, gasholders, blast furnaces, etc. This inventory of industrial heritage is also a compilation of « typologies » in the tradition of the German objective photography. Although its illustrations span a number of years, from the end of the 1960s to the end of the 1970s, Ancient Typologies revisits a moment in the oeuvre. The photographic plates presented in this book were first exhibited at the 14th Sao Paulo International Biennial in 1977.
De foto's van de Bechers kunnen worden beschouwd als de beschrijvende kaarten in een catalogus van in onbruik geraakte industriële gebouwen. Op de afbeeldingen zijn onder andere koeltorens, watertorens, gashouders, hoogovens... te zien. Hun inventaris van het industriële erfgoed geeft aanleiding tot een reeks « typologieën » in de traditie van de Duitse objectieve fotografie. Hoewel de iconografie uit Oude typologieën een ruime periode bestrijkt - van eind jaren 1960 tot eind jaren 1970 - gaat het hier niet over een overzichtswerk van de documentaire fotografie van Bernd en Hilla Becher, maar veeleer over een momentopname in hun oeuvre. De voorgestelde plaaten werden gerealiseerd naar aanleiding van de 14de Internationale Biënnale van São Paulo in 1977, waar ze voor het eerst te zien waren.
