Following in the footsteps of Edgar Degas, Pierre Bonnard reinvented the depiction of women bathing, particularly of Marthe, asserting his modernity with striking force. This subject raised for him pictorial questions of form and colour, space and memory, composition and the play of mirrors and gazes, inviting this intimate space - the bathroom - to transform reality and reinvent itself within an enlarged everyday life. The peculiar relationship Bonnard maintained with Marthe throughout his life marked his oeuvre, inevitably lending his painting a distinctive and deeply personal tone. Regarded as one of the greatest colourists of the twentieth century, Bonnard offers through his nudes at their toilette a vision of the world that is both enchanted and disenchanted. Published on the occasion of the first exhibition devoted entirely to this subject, this catalogue stimulates fascinating dialogues between paintings, gouaches, watercolours, ink and pencil drawings, as well as photographs.
