Ce volume examine les relations et les influences entre l'illustration et l'identité dans leurs formes et leurs significations multiples. Il interroge, et illustre, à travers une variété d'approches théoriques, d'études de cas, de projets professionnels et d'expériences personnelles, les moyens individuels, interculturels et interdisciplinaires par lesquels l'illustration contribue aujourd'hui et a contribué au fil du temps à la formation de l'identité ou des identités. Il fournit la preuve que l'illustration participe à l'expression, et même à la construction de l'identité ou des identités individuelles et collectives, que celles-ci soient culturelles, sociales, ethniques, nationales, politiques ou autres. En montrant comment l'étude de l'illustration fournit des éclairages pertinents et précieux non seulement sur la représentation, mais aussi sur la construction de l'identité (parmi lesquelles les identités liées à l'âge, au sexe et au genre, ou encore à l'appartenance sociale, nationale, culturelle et politique), il contribue à la compréhension de la pertinence culturelle et de l'impact socio-politique de l'illustration.
Illustrating Identity/ies
This volume examines the relations and influences between illustration and identity in their multiple meanings and forms. It questions, and illustrates, through a variety of theoretical approaches, case studies and personal projects and experiments, the interdisciplinary and cross-cultural means through which illustration contributes today and has contributed through time to the shaping of identity/ies. It provides evidence that illustration participates in the expression of, and even the construction of, individual and collective identity/ies - be these cultural, social, ethnic, national, political or of other types. By showing how the study of illustration provides powerful insights into, not only the representation, but also the construction of identity - among which gender identities, social, national and political identities, cultural identities, hybrid identities and performative identities -, it contributes to the understanding of the cultural relevance and socio-political impact of illustration.
Nathalie Collé is Senior Lecturer in English Studies at the Université de Lorraine in Nancy, France. She specialises in the illustration of classics of English literature, and particularly of 17th - and 18th-century travel narratives.
Monica Latham is Professor of British literature at the Université de Lorraine in Nancy, France. She is a specialist of Virginia Woolf and genetic criticism and has worked on numerous modernist and postmodernist authors.
