Cascade de Salins
Breveté à Zurich en 1888, le photochrome, image créée à partir d'un film négatif noir et blanc et transférée sur des plaques lithographiques, permet pour la première fois la large diffusion de photographies en couleurs. Celui-ci fait partie d'une collection de sites, architectures et monuments français éditée au tournant du XXe siècle par la Detroit Publishing Company, qui avait acquis les droits d'utilisation exclusifs du procédé.
L'Auze, affluent entièrement cantalou de la Dordogne, prend sa source vers 1195 m au pied du puy de l'Agneau et près du col de Néronne. Elle traverse plateaux et vallées avant de se précipiter d'une trentaine de mètres à Salins, en contrebas du viaduc de l'ancienne ligne Aurillac-Mauriac ouverte à l'époque de l'image. Au bord du sentier qui chemine derrière la cascade, une source jaillit : la « fontaine des druides ».
Salins waterfall
Patented in Zurich in 1888, the Photochrom, an image created from a black and white negative film and transferred onto lithographic printing plates, made the widespread distribution of colour photographs possible for the first time. This one is part of a collection of French sites, architectures and monuments published at the turn of the 20th century by the Detroit Publishing Company, which had acquired the exclusive rights to use the process.
The spring of the Auze, a tributary of the Dordogne River located entirely in the Cantal department, lies at an altitude of 1195 mat the foot of the Puy de l'Agneau, near the Néronne pass. The river crosses plateaus and valleys before cascading thirty meters down to Salins, below the viaduct of the old Aurillac-Mauriac line which had been opened at the time when the picture was taken. On the edge of the path behind the waterfall lies a spring called the « Fountain of the Druids ».
