Charles R. Gordon Stuart était un photographe anglais né en 1909, qui fit ses premières images ferroviaires en France en région parisienne en 1938. Après guerre, il eut l'opportunité de revenir et de parcourir toutes les régions de la SNCF entre 1947 et 1964.Il fut donc un témoin privilégié de l'évolution des chemins de fer français, depuis la fin des compagnies jusqu'au déclin de la vapeur et l'apparition des moyens de traction contemporains.
Issu de ce fonds photographique mis à disposition par Bram van derVelden, responsable des archives de la French Railway Society, cet ouvrage retrace les voyages ferroviaires en France de Charles R. Gordon Stuart au travers de près de 600 images en noir et blanc inédites, légendées par Luc Fournier, Chargé de mission pour le patrimoine ferroviaire auprès du Ministère de la Culture.
The English photographer who loved French trains
Charles R. Gordon Stuart was a British photographer born in 1909, who took his first French railway pictures in and around Paris in 1938. After WWII, he was able to return and travel over all the SNCF regions, from 1947 to 1964. He was therefore a privileged witness of how French railways evolved, from the end of the private companies to the decline of steam and the advent of contemporary motive power.
This book is based on a body of period photographs that was made available by Bram van derVelden, in charge of the archives of the French Railways Society. It gives an account of Charles R. Gordon Stuart's railway travels across France, through some 600 previously unpublished monochrome pictures. The captions were written by Luc Fournier, Project Manager for railway heritage with the French Ministry of Cullture.
