Tailler sa charpente à la main, de l'arbre à la maison, est une démarche fondamentale que redécouvrent de plus en plus de jeunes charpentiers. Il y a dans cette action le goût de dialoguer avec la matière vivante. Il importe aussi de rétablir un rapport à l'architecture dans lequel le bâtisseur est maître de son geste et de son matériau. Il ne s'agit pas de renier la technologie moderne, mais de prouver de façon simple qu'il est important de maintenir parallèlement plusieurs voies pour arriver à ses fins.
Les expériences internationales des rencontres Charpentiers sans frontières permettent comme ici à Daubeuf-la-Campagne en 2011, sur un monument historique, de croiser les expériences et le savoir d'experts de divers pays autour d'un chantier pratique de construction ou de restauration de charpente. Du geste et du savoir partagés se dégage une complicité communicative.
Carpenters without borders
Many young professional carpenters are discovering the possibilities and benefits of taking control of the entire process of timber-framing, from the forest to the finished building. Through the use of hand-tools, they are acquiring a passion for wood as a living material. In mastering the material and the process of construction, the carpenter discovers an intimate involvement with the architecture itself.
This is no mere rejection of modern technology but proof of the simple truth of the adage : there are many ways of achieving a given goal. The international workshops -Carpenters without borders, such as the event held at the historic medieval barn of Daubeuf-la-Campagne in September 2011, provided the opportunity for the exchange of a wealth of experience and knowledge in the practice of traditional carpentry. From these exchanges, a still greater wealth of communication has arisen.
