Édouard Will est une des principales figures de l'histoire grecque au XXe s., en France et au-delà. Il ne se revendiqua jamais d'une école ou d'un groupe, mais marqua la recherche dans presque tous les domaines de l'histoire grecque. La cité archaïque et les royaumes hellénistiques, les institutions, l'économie et la religion, la Grèce égéenne comme les colonies d'Occident et le Proche-Orient hellénisé, rien ne lui était étranger et il changea notre manière de percevoir la plupart des problèmes qui occupent encore les historiens. Vu avec nos préoccupations actuelles, Édouard Will est aussi un témoin des transformations profondes, aussi bien intellectuelles qu'institutionnelles, de l'histoire de l'Antiquité dans la seconde moitié du XXe s. Les contributions rassemblées ici ne visent donc pas seulement à délimiter tel ou tel acquis mais, également, à partir de cette oeuvre et de la manière dont elle est perçue aujourd'hui, à mettre en lumière les évolutions dans la manière même d'écrire l'histoire grecque.
Édouard Will was one of the main figures active in Greek history during the 20th century, in France and beyond. He always avoided being part of a school of thought or of a particular group, but he left his imprint on research in almost every area of Greek history. The archaic city and the Hellenistic kingdoms, institutions, economy and religion, Aegean Greece as well as the Western colonies and the Hellenized Near East, nothing was foreign to him. He changed our way of understanding most of the problems which are still subject of active research. Seen with our present preoccupations, Édouard Will is also a witness to the profound transformations, both intellectual and institutional, in the field of Ancient history during the second half of the 20th century. The purpose of this book is twofold : first, to highlight the lasting impact of Will's work in history research today, and also, based on his work and the the way it is perceived today, to highlight the changes in the very way Greek history is written.
