Fénelon
Issu d'une vieille famille périgourdine, François Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon grandit dans son château natal de Sainte-Mondane. Il gravit avec succès tous les échelons de la hiérarchie ecclésiastique jusqu'à sa nomination à l'archevêché de Cambrai. Précepteur du dauphin, ami puis adversaire de Bossuet, auteur d'une oeuvre impressionnante, Fénelon marque en profondeur son époque. Son fameux Télémaque connaît une vraie gloire, au point que les petits Français y apprennent à lire jusqu'à la fin du XIXe siècle ! Admirés par Rousseau ou Robespierre, imités par Chateaubriand ou Aragon, les écrits de Fénelon inspirèrent également Mozart pour un de ses opéras. Il meurt en 1715, quelques mois avant Louis XIV... qui l'avait disgracié. Son château ouvert à la visite est aujourd'hui l'une des merveilles architecturales du Périgord Noir.
Fénelon
Born into an old family of the Périgord, François Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon was raised in the castle of Sainte Mondane. He successfully climbed all the rungs of ecclesiastical hierarchy, reaching the nomination as Archbishop of Cambrai. Tutor to the Dauphin, friend and later enemy of Bossuet, author of an impressive quantity of works, Fénelon left a deep imprint on his times. His vastly acclaimed novel, Telemaque, became the reading manual of all French children until the end of the 19th century ! Admired by Rousseau and Robespierre, imitated by Chateaubriand and Aragon, Fénelon's writings also inspired Mozart for one of his operas. He died in 1715, a few months before Louis XIV who had dismissed him from court. His castle, which is open to visits, is one of the architectural marvels of the Périgord Noir.
