Giorgio Griffa
Depuis la fin des années 1960, l'artiste italien Giorgio Griffa (né en 1936) réalise des oeuvres abstraites reconnaissables à leurs toiles vierges, non apprêtées et non tendues, travaillées à même le sol. Associé au mouvement de la Pittura analitica (Peinture analytique) au tournant des années 1970, il conserve tout au long de sa carrière une grande indépendance et originalité. Sa peinture, à la fois austère et joyeuse, se décline en cycles et oscille avec un équilibre subtil entre l'apollinien et le dionysiaque.
L'exposition et le catalogue qui l'accompagne présentent un don exceptionnel de l'artiste d'un ensemble de dix-huit oeuvres au Centre Pompidou, Musée national d'art moderne. Retraçant les recherches picturales de Giorgio Griffa de 1969 à 2021, ce parcours permet de redécouvrir un acteur majeur de la peinture italienne et européenne de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle.
Since the end of the 1960s, the Italian artist Giorgio Griffa (born in 1936) has produced abstract works recognisable by their blank, unprimed and unstretched canvases, which he lays on the floor to work on. Associated with the movement Pittura analitica (Analytical Painting) at the turn of the 1970s, he has always maintained great independence and originality throughout his career. His painting, which is both austere and joyful, is divided into cycles and fluctuates subtly between the Apollonian and the Dionysian.
The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue present an outstanding donation by the artist of eighteen works to the Centre Pompidou, Musée National d'Art Moderne. Representing Giorgio Griffa's pictorial research between 1969 and 2021, they propose the rediscovery of one of the leading artists in Italian and European painting of the second half of the 20th century.
