Hindust(...)n(...) R(...)gas-s Index will prove quite useful to all musicians, scholars and students of music who need to consult the main contemporary texts on r(...)ga-s descriptions, compositions and vist(...)ra-s.
Browsing through the many tables of contents of these works (often in several volumes or parts) in order to extract required information, is a time consuming activity and Moutal's book, although non-exhaustive, will be a tremendous time-saver for consultation.
The present work covers 3 260 bibliographical references of 704 names of r(...)ga-s found in 37 devan(...)gar(...) texts (in 86 volumes) by 23 major authors.
Patrick Moutal is Professor of Indian Music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (France) since 1984.
Admitted at the Faculty of Performing Arts of Banaras Hindu University in 1970, he completed the following degrees : Diploma in sitar (1973), Bachelor (Gold Medal, 1976), Master (Omkarnath Thakur Price, 1978) and Doctorate in Performance and Compositions in 1983. Back in France, he was awarded the French distinction of Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Since then, he is dedicated to promoting Indian musical culture.
He is also the author of Hindust(...)n(...) Gata-s compilation : Instrumental Themes in North Indian Classical Music, Comparative Study of Hindust(...)n(...) R(...)ga-s (Vol. I) and Hindust(...)n(...) R(...)ga Sang(...)ta : Mécanismes de base de la Musique Classique du Nord de l'Inde (French).
