Un regard sur la sculpture hyperréaliste
Seule collection publique française à conserver une sculpture de l'Américain Duane Hanson, le Musée d'arts de Nantes a choisi pour cet ouvrage d'aller au-delà d'un état des lieux historique de cet art figuratif méticuleusement réaliste, pour affirmer le caractère profondément humain et sensible des sculptures hyperréalistes.
Entre émotion et fascination, identification et rejet, onze sculpteurs et sculptrices occidentaux, usant de façon exclusive ou ponctuelle de la représentation hyperréaliste, sont ici réunis. Parmi eux, Duane Hanson et John DeAndrea font figures de représentants de la première heure, mais ce catalogue illustré, reproduisant des oeuvres pour certaines inédites, souligne également l'importance du travail de Gilles Barbier, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Daniel Firman, Sam Jinks, Tony Matelli, Sanaa Murtti, Evan Penny, Marc Sijan et Tip Toland. Chacune à sa manière, leurs oeuvres entrent en écho avec les enjeux de la sculpture et du portrait pour placer l'individu social, sensible et singulier au centre de la démarche artistique. L'être humain dans toute sa complexité devient source de création.
Pour contextualiser, éclairer et approfondir ces enjeux, le regard de la commissaire Katell Jaffrès rencontre les approches historiques et phénoménologiques de l'historien de l'art Didier Semin et du philosophe Charles Bobant. Textes, oeuvres et images questionnent ainsi nos représentations des corps, des individualités, des sensibilités.

A perspective on hyperrealistic sculpture
The only public institution in France that is home to a work by the American sculptor Duane Hanson, the Musée d'arts de Nantes made the decision, for this volume, to move beyond a historical overview of this meticulously realistic form of figurative art in order to affirm the profoundly human and sensitive character of hyperrealistic sculpture.
Caught between emotion and fascination, acceptance and rejection, eleven Western sculptors, making full or partial use of hyperrealistic representation, are brought together here. While Duane Hanson and John DeAndrea embody the beginnings of hyperrealism, this illustrated catalogue - including some never-before-seen works - underscores as well the importance of the oeuvre of Gilíes Barbier, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Daniel Firman, Sam Jinks, Tony Matelli, Sanaa Murtti, Evan Penny, Marc Sijan, and Tip Toland. Each of their works, in its own way, echoes the challenges facing sculpture and portraiture in placing the social, sensitive, and unique individual at the centre of the artistic process. The human being, in all his complexity, becomes the source of creation.
To contextualise, illuminate, and analyse these challenges in depth, the perspective of the curator Katell Jaffrès encounters the historical and phenomenological approaches of the art historian Didier Semin and the philosopher Charles Bobant. Essays, sculptures, and images thus question our representations of bodies, individualities, and sensibilities.
