Les Docks, projet conçu par l'agence Jacob + Macfarlane, est une des créations architecturales les plus originales réalisées à Paris ces dernières années. Située en bord de Seine, la « Cité de la mode et du design » regroupe l'Institut Français de la Mode, des boutiques, un lieu événementiel, et représente aujourd'hui de façon emblématique l'identité et la culture de la capitale. Les Docks sont à l'origine un véritable monument historique, l'une des premières réalisations en ciment armé au coeur de Paris (1907). Plus qu'une restauration, le projet de Jacob + Macfarlane s'impose comme un « Plug-over » enrichi de greffes extérieures, totalement traversé par des circulations ouvertes au public. Partant de la géométrie abstraite de la structure, l'agence développe son projet selon une rigoureuse paramétrie issue du contexte caractérisé par une manifeste couleur verte. Les Docks s'affirment comme un signal marquant, un authentique dispositif urbain, mariant l'histoire et le contemporain de façon inédite.

Les Docks, the project designed by the architecture firm Jakob + Macfarlane, is one of the most original architectural works built in Paris in recent years. Standing beside the Seine, the « Cité de la mode et du design » gathers under one roof the Institut Français de la Mode (French Fashion Institute), shops, eateries and a space for events. It has become an emblem of the capital's identity and culture. The origins of Les Docks rest upon a genuine historic monument, one of the first constructions in reinforced concrete built in the heart of Paris (1907). More than a mere restoration, the project by Jakob + Macfarlane appears as a « Plug-over » enhanced by exterior « grafts », criss-crossed by circulations totally open to the public. Starting with the abstract geometry of the structure, the firm developed its design based on strict adherence to parameters drawn from the context while forcefully highlighting the existence of this add-on with a striking green color. Les Docks stands out as a powerful signal, an authentic urban system, conjugating the historical and the contemporary in a way that breaks totally new ground. The firm of Dominique Jakob and Brendan MacFarlane has produced some of the most innovative and experimental architecture in France.
