Rédigé par ce jeune érudit il y a plus de 450 ans, le Discours de la servitude volontaire suscita l'admiration inquiète de son ami Montaigne et stimula - jusqu'à aujourd'hui - la pensée et l'action de nombreux combattants de la liberté.
C'est un petit voyage à travers l'histoire et l'architecture de Sarlat, la vie et l'oeuvre de La Boétie que nous vous invitons à partager. Ici, les vieilles pierres comme les hommes veulent rester debout...
Étienne de La Boétie's birthplace, a Renaissance icon in the old quarter of Sarlat, evokes a golden age for this little Périgord town, then under strong Italian influence.
However, the unanimous amazement at the ornamentations of its beautiful façade should not obscure the reason for its occupant's renown. His Discourse of Voluntary Servitude, written by this young scholar more than 450 years ago, aroused the apprehensive admiration of his friend, the great French writer Montaigne... and it has continued, to this day, to stimulate the thinking and action of numerous figures fighting for freedom of thought.
In this guide, we invite you to share in a little journey through the history and architecture of Sarlat, as well as the life and work of La Boétie. Here, the old stones, like the men, still talk to us.

Andrea Polato
Tombé amoureux de la beauté des paysages du Périgord Noir, ce photographe professionnel italien a choisi de s'installer à Montfort (Vitrac). Il réalise photos de mode, d'architecture, de gastronomie et des portraits pour agences de publicité, magazines et sites web.
Perrin Keller
Diplômé de l'école des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg (section illustration), il est aujourd'hui spécialisé dans la médiation du patrimoine.
Romain Bondonneau
Après un 3e cycle d'histoire et d'archéologie, il devient professeur d'histoire et de géographie au lycée Pré de Cordy à Sarlat. Président-fondateur de l'Association Périgord Patrimoines, il a réalisé de nombreuses publications sur l'histoire, le patrimoine ou l'écologie locale.
Michael Jacobson
Author, former editor, and long a familiar voice to listeners to the BBC World Service. Has lived at La Roque-Gageac for 20 years, writing in particular about the wines of the region, as well as environmental questions, local history and various other topics.
Andrea Polato
Enraptured by the Périgord Noir's beautiful scenery, this Italian professional photographer decided to make his home at Montfort (Vitrac). Besides fashion, architecture and gastronomic subjects, he
continues
to
take portrait photos for publicity agencies, magazines and websites.
Perrin Keller
A graduate of the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts, he now specialises in illustrating architectural treasures inherited from the past.
Romain Bondonneau
After taking a higher degree in history and archaeology, he became professor of history and geography at the Pré de Cordy lycée in Sarlat. Founder and president of the Périgord Heritage association, he has produced numerous publications on the local history, heritage and ecology.
