Recognised since the beginnings of human history, pollution has in the last two hundred years become a demon for European societies. The acceleration of industrialisation and urbanisation, along with changes in their scale, have resulted in widespread pollution which severely damages the health and well-being of human beings, vegetation, the built environment, and which presents serious threats for the future. However, even if pollution has very concrete effects, this book shows that it is also a social construction and a concept which changes over time. Authors from eight different nationalities come together in this book to examine the history of European pollution between the end of the eighteenth century and the present. The emergence and the content of the concept of pollution, the contamination of air and water, the relationships between cities and industries and the environmental conflicts are successively explored.
