Les recherches sur les Phéniciens et les Puniques se sont pendant longtemps essentiellement concentrées sur les images en creux laissées par d'autres peuples, suivant des points de vue helléno ou égypto centriques, proche-orientaux etc. Ce volume, fruit d'une rencontre internationale à Paris en 2016, délaissant les images en creux laissées par les cultures voisines sur les Phéniciens et les Puniques, propose au contraire une enquête sur les formes d'échanges et d'interaction, sur les élaborations culturelles - matérielles ou non - engagées entre ces derniers et les communautés qu'ils rencontrent en Méditerranée. Pour saisir la complexité de ces reformulations culturelles réciproques qui se jouent dans ce middle-ground méditerranéen, le volume fait la part belle au dialogue interdisciplinaire afin de présenter de nouveaux outils, de valoriser des découvertes récentes et d'échanger collectivement sur les questions actuelles qui animent notre discipline.
Research on Phoenician and Punic cultures has long accorded a too-privileged place for Hellencentric, Egyptocentric or Near Eastern perspectives, which necessarily convey only hollow and superficial insights since they derive from « foreign » points of view. This publication is the result of an international workshop held in Paris in 2016, in which we attempted deliberately to abandon such dependence on the hollow and superficial portraits of Phoenician and Punic culture left by their neighbors. Instead, the studies contained herein concentrate on the various forms of exchange and interaction which took place between Phoenicians and Punic peoples and the communities they encountered in the Mediterranean. Our analyses pay special attention to the cultural products, be they material or immaterial. In order better to grasp the complexity of these reciprocal cultural reformulations that took place in this Mediterranean « middle-ground », we have emphasized interdisciplinary dialogue, imagining and testing new tools, taking into account recent discoveries, and encouraging collective exchanges on the current issues that enliven our discipline.
