Les régions antarctiques
Cette carte des « régions antarctiques » de 1923 pourrait aussi bien s'intituler « l'antarctique est à nous », signé l'Empire britannique. Elle prend en compte les principales explorations menées depuis le début du XXe siècle par les grandes puissances au nom de la« course au sud », qui s'est conclue en 1911 par la victoire inattendue et mortifiante (pour Londres) du Norvégien Roald Amundsen au pôle Sud. Mais conformément aux revendications du temps, elle agrandit considérablement les étroits territoires continentaux alors véritablement reconnus, déjà baptisés par les explorateurs du Commonwealth des noms de leurs « gracieux souverains ».
The Antarctic Regions
This map of the « Antarctic regions » dating from 1923 could just as well have been called « Antarctica is ours », and signed by the British Empire. It takes into account the main explorations carried out from the beginning of the 20th century by the great powers in the name of the « race to the South », which ended in 1911 with the unexpected and mortifying (for London) victory of the Norwegian Roald Amundsen at the South Pole. But in accordance with the claims of the time, it considerably enlarged the narrow continental territories then truly recognized, already baptized by the explorers of the Commonwealth with the names of their « gracious sovereigns ».
