Lignes isothermes de l'hémisphère nord
Cette étonnante carte des lignes isothermes (de température constante) de l'hémisphère nord, publiée en 1837 à Gotha en Thuringe, est le produit des explorations, des recherches et des données des savants d'europe du nord les plus brillants de leur temps. Figurant parmi les 75 cartes d'un « atlas physique » complément du magistral Kosmos, d'Alexander von Humboldt (par ailleurs inventeur des isothermes), elle montre aussi la persistance d'un mythe ancien, soutenu alors par la science comme par la littérature, et qui ne se dissoudra vraiment qu'à la fin du XIXe siècle : l'existence d'une mer libre au pôle nord.
Isothermal lines of the northern hemisphere
This astonishing map of isothermal lines (of constant temperature) of the northern hemisphere, published in 1837 in Gotha, Thuringia, was the product of the explorations, research and data of the most brilliant scholars of northern europe of their time. Included among the 75 maps of a « physical atlas » complementing the masterful cosmos, by Alexander von Humboldt (also inventor of isotherms), it also shows the persistence of an ancient myth, supported at the time by science as well as by literature, and which would not really be dissipated until the end of the 19th century : the existence of an open sea at the north pole.
