Martine Franck (b. 1938) is one of the few women photographers to have gained international recognition and is best known for her photographs of those living on the margins of society or in isolated communities.
Her sensitive and compassionate approach has enabled her to take gently revealing portraits of those who may view the camera as an intrusion, while her beautifully-composed landscapes and geometric studies reveal an aesthetic rigour that is rooted in her fine art background. Married to one of the founders of Magnum, Henri Cartier-Bresson until his death in 2004, she herself became a member of Magnum in 1983 and has been a key figure in the history of the agency.
