Mastering Languages, Taming the World
The Production and Circulation of European Dictionaries and Lexicons of Asian Languages (16th-19th Centuries)
Les dictionnaires et les lexiques bilingues qui furent édités ou compilés entre le XVIe siècle et le XIXe siècle offrent de précieux aperçus historiques sur les dynamiques à l'oeuvre dans les interactions et les rencontres entre Européens et Asiatiques, principalement en matière d'échanges culturels, mais également quant à la diversité des formes prises par l'activité diplomatique (officielle et officieuse) et, plus encore, quant aux entreprises missionnaires, catholiques puis protestantes. S'ils éclairent l'avancement des savoirs linguistiques ainsi que leurs dynamiques, les dictionnaires sont eux-mêmes les produits de ces savoirs ; ils sont aussi les « outils du métier » les plus précieux pour les philologues et les traducteurs. Ce volume se compose des articles de quatorze chercheurs d'horizons disciplinaires et méthodologiques variés, qui contribuent à mieux mettre en évidence l'inépuisable richesse de ces matériaux sous-étudiés et fraient ainsi la voie à de futures perspectives de recherche sur ces « trésors de mots » d'Asie.
Bilingual dictionaries and lexicons edited or compiled during the early modern and modern eras (1500-1900) offer invaluable historical insights into the dynamics of international interactions and encounters between Europeans and Asians, mostly in terms of cultural exchanges, but also in connection with variegated forms of diplomatic activities (both official and non-official), and even more with Catholic and, later, Protestant, missionary enterprises. If they shed light on the advancement of linguistic knowledge and its dynamics, dictionaries are themselves the products of this knowledge, they are also the most precious tools for philologists and translators to ply their trade. This volume includes thirteen contributions from scholars with different backgrounds and methodologies to better emphasise the inexhaustible richness of these understudied materials, and to pave the way for future research perspectives on Asian « word-hoards. »
