Monuments or graves ?
The etymology of « Monument » brings together the meaning of « grave », « mourning », heroic and/or tragic loss during wars and their commemoration.
It also suggests the progress and the hope of the beautification of the places where the human beings live, as well as the contest of history or, on the contrary, its instrumentalization. The monuments made of stones, words, bronze, music... have frequently been either « statuomania » for the Great Men, democracy-building or totalitarian gagging. For decades, they have become spectacular devices telling the past and the present of the memory confronting them with innovative thinking from the whole world.
