Cet ouvrage retrace l'histoire et les 3 mois de combats de ces volontaires français en Normandie, mais revient également sur la longue période d'entraînement de cette unité commando, depuis sa formation en Grande-Bretagne en 1941, jusqu'à son engagement dans Overlord. Environ 250 Français furent brevetés commandos, mais 177 d'entre eux seulement prendront pied en Normandie. Qui étaient ces hommes, ces volontaires de la France Libre réunis autour d'un seul chef, Philippe Kieffer, et qui pour certains participèrent au raid de Dieppe en août 1942, puis aux coups de force nocturnes de l'hiver 1943-1944 sur les côtes de France? Enfin, en s'appuyant sur une documentation inédite - archives familiales et privées - et sur une iconographie abondante, cet ouvrage présente pour la première fois les parcours individuels ou collectifs de chacun de ces acteurs du Débarquement trop vite oubliés après la guerre.
Among the first troops to land in Normandy on 6 June 1944 were of Frenchmen, 177 commando marines belonging to the battalion of Lieutenant de vaisseau Philippe Kreffer. Attached to no4 Commando and to Lord Lovat's First Special Britrade, this Free French Forces unit, known famillarly as the "Kieffer commando", fought with outstanding bravery in its Sword Beach sector to capture all its objectives; the coastal strongpoints and the Casino at Ouistreham. After linking up with the paratroopers of 6th Airborne at Bénouville, the French Green Berets moved across to the right bank of the Orne to hold the Allled beachhead untit they left Normandy in early September.
This book not only recounts the story and the 3 month of fighting of these French volunteers in Normandy, it also looks back at the long training period this commando unit underwent, front being raised the Uk in 1941 right up to its commitment in Overlord. Some 250 Frenchmen received commission in the commandos, but of these only 177 actually set foot in Normand Who were these men; these Free French volunteers gathered around one leader, Philippe Kieffer, some of whom took part in the Dieppe raid in August 1942, then in night raids against the coast of France during the winter of 1943-1944? Lastly, based on previously unpublished material - private and family archives - this lavishly illustrated book presents for the first time the path taken individually or collectively by each of these men involved in D-day and so soon forgotten after the war.
