La couleur joue un rôle clé dans son esthétique, qui tire le meilleur parti du délicat procédé carbro pour ses tirages tricolores, afin de créer une surface à la texture et aux tonalités troublantes. Il se disait en quête de « paradis artificiels », vers une perfection de la forme avec une touche surréaliste.
Cette monographie retrace sa trajectoire commerciale et artistique depuis l'apogée de sa carrière comme photographe publicitaire le mieux payé de New York à son exil à Hollywood dans les années 1940 après le scandale que provoquèrent ses photographies érotiques. Ce livre explore l'esthétique novatrice d'Outerbridge, ses natures mortes cubistes et ses photographies pour les magazines, mais aussi ses nus controversés et ses relations avec d'autres grands photographes d'avant-garde comme Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand et Man Ray. Whether in his sumptuous images for advertising or his soft-hued nudes, Paul Outerbridge (1896-1958) was an alchemist of desire. Embracing the complex tricolor-carbro process, he created seductive surfaces of texture and tone. He sought « artificial paradises » : formal perfection with a surreal edge.
This concise monograph introduces Outerbridge's unique aesthetic and commercial and artistic trajectory, from his professional peak as New York's highest-paid commercial photographer to his retreat to Hollywood in the 1940s after a scandal over his erotic photography. With key examples from his oeuvre, we explore his innovative style through Cubist still life images, magazine photographs, and his controversial nudes, as well as his interaction with other avant-garde photographers, like Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, and Man Ray. Along the way, we recognize Outerbridge's ability to transform everyday objects into quasi-abstract compositions and his leading role in championing the expressionistic as much as commercial potential of color photographs.
