Pleased to meet you
À l'honneur de cette nouvelle livraison de Pleased to meet you, l'artiste Laurent Le Deunff, notre rock star du jour, donne plutôt dans le registre folk. Trempant ses crayons dans l'eau claire des ruisseaux, prenant les mythes des origines pour décors et les gags de cartoons pour intrigues, il traque, braconne et chevauche les rêves ancestraux liés au vivant. En cryptozoologue averti, il reconduit sans cesse le geste démiurge de modeler la glaise - ou le papier mâché ou le ciment - et peut se vanter d'avoir engendré quantités d'animaux hybrides, créatures sauvages ou d'atelier, zombies mutants ou fossiles. Sur l'arche de Le Deunff, où le cerf peut devenir limace et la vache homme, les règnes batifolent dans une heureuse fluidité digne des Métamorphoses. Des coquilles vides, des cerveaux pleins, des totems mais pas de tabous, qui de la nature ou de la culture aura le dernier mot ? Ce qui est sûr, c'est que ça trompe énormément !

Our guest of honor for this new installment of Pleased to Meet You is the artist Laurent Le Deunff. Closer to the folk genre than our usual brand of rock star, he happily dips his pencils in the pure water of country streams, using myths of origin as backdrops and cartoon gags as plotlines, while tracking, poaching and taking a ride on ancestral dreams linked to the living. As an accomplished cryptozoologist, he incessantly repeats the demiurgic act of modelling things from clay- or papier-mâché, or cement - and can boast of having created numerous hybrid animals, mutant creatures from the wild and the studio, zombies and fossils. On Le Deunff's ark, where a deer can easily take on the form of a slug or a cow that of a man, the various phyla frolic in a state of happy fluidity worthy of Metamorphoses. Empty shells, overflowing brains, and totems abound, but there are strictly no taboos. Nature or culture ? Who will have the final say ? One thing is sure, the answer is as hard to unravel as one of his knotted trunks !
