This anthology of documents is part of the "Retour aux sources" collection which was inaugurated in 1999 by A Documented History of the Commonuealth, (S. Garner. J.-C. Redonnet).
The purpose of this book is to provide British civilisation students with a course collection of handpicked documents considered by researchers to be useful primary sources.
The documents have been compiled mainly from political, economie and social archives. They include enquiry reports, Bills and Acts of Parliament, extracts from Parliamentary debates as well as policy statements, speeches and correspondence.
The sources have been classified in chronological order. They should help readers to clarify various subjects referred to when studying poverty and inequality in British society in the second half of the twentieth century. Further subject analysis is provided in complementary works for example the collection "Questions de civilisation".
The anthology also includes a background chronology and a short bibliography of further reading references.
