Quatrième de couverture

What is the source of the spirit of independence which blows through the privateers' city and makes Saint-Malo one of the most fascinating towns in the whole world ?

With an area equivalent to half the Vatican (about 55 acres), protected by a ring of ramparts almost one nautical mile long, the intra-muros city is the jewel of greater Saint-Malo, resulting from the amalgamation of three towns in 1967 : Saint-Malo, Paramé and Saint-Servan. Four centuries (the XVIth, XVIIth, XVIIIth and XIXth) have inscribed this port for ever in the annals of fame, since it gave France so many illustrious men and knights of the sea. In 1944 the fortified town was more than 90 % destroyed, but it safeguarded its honour (semper fidelis). Rebuilt after the war, how else could it demonstrate its immortality ?
