La Seine fut très tôt perçue comme «la grande rue d'une capitale dont Rouen et Le Havre sont les faubourgs». Pour les peintres et écrivains du XIXe siècle, elle représentait le fleuve «national» par excellence, celui qui, dans la conscience collective, nourrie de l'élan républicain et de la recherche de l'unité nationale à partir de l'Ile-de-France, symbolisait l'essor et l'ouverture du pays vers de nouveaux horizons. Ces évocations constituent le fond commun des images de la vallée de la Seine, les sédiments d'une vision que livrèrent progressivement artistes et voyageurs (...)
La photographie en soi n'explique rien, elle pointe du doigt, extrait des effets de réalité qui pourront donner lieu à des commentaires. C'est le sens du travail de John Davies, de sa réflexion au moyen de la photographie. Ainsi ses vues ne s'attachent plus au pittoresque des lieux ou des ruines, mais plutôt aux transformations qu'opèrent dans ces paysages les mutations du XXe siècle
The Seine was seen very early on as "the high street of a capital city of which Rouen and Le Havre are suburbs". For painters and writers in the 19th century, it was the nation's quintessential river, the river which, in the collective psyche, driven as it was by Republican zeal and the search for national unity based around the Ile-de-France (Paris) area, symbolised the progress of the nation towards the new horizons it was then opening up. Such considerations form the common bedrock of images of the Seine Valley, alluvial deposits gradually built up by a perception created over time by artists and travellers (...)
Photography itself explains nothing - it simply points out, offering up extracts of reality that may attract comment. This is the meaning of the work of John Davies, of the thinking he does in taking photographs. In this way, his images no longer seek the picturesque of place or ruin, but rather the modifications made to such landscapes by the changes brought by the 20th century.
John Davies est né en 1949 à Sedgefield, comté de Durham (GB). Il vit à Liverpool. Depuis une vingtaine d'années, ses photographies noir et blanc, réalisées de points de vue élevés, à la chambre le plus souvent équipée d'un grand angle, documentent de manière inédite les modifications du territoire européen. Après s'être attaché aux paysages naturels des îles britanniques (Mist Mountain Water Wind, Travelling Light, 1986), il décrit dans A Green and Pleasant Land (Cornerhouse, 1987) l'évolution du Nord industriel de l'Angleterre. Au milieu des années 80, son attention s'élargit à d'autres régions et villes d'Europe (Cross Currents, Cornerhouse, 1992). En France, il réalise plusieurs séries, dont récemment sur le littoral du Sud-Ouest : Visa III, Littoral / Le Retour de la nature (Filigranes, 2001). John Davies poursuit actuellement un travail intitulé Metropoli Project, consacré aux grands centres urbains britanniques.
John Davies was born 1949 in Sedgefield, County Durham (GB). He now lives in Liverpool. For some twenty years now his black and white photographs, taken from high vantage points, usually with a wide angle lens, have provided unusual images documenting the changes occurring in the western reaches of Europe. After concentrating on the natural landscapes of the British Isles (Mist Mountain Water Wind, Travelling Light, 1986), he set out to depict the evolving character of England's industrial north in A Green and Pleasant Land (Cornerhouse, 1987). In the mid-1980s, he broadened his field of view to include other regions and cities in Europe (Cross Currents, Cornerhouse, 1992). In France, he has completed a number of series, including recently one on the southwestern coastline : Visa III, Littoral / le Retour de la Nature (Filigranes, 2001). John Davies is currently working on his Metropoli Project, which is devoted to the major British urban centres.
