La reconnaissance systématique de la Zone Economique Exclusive (ZEE) française du golfe de Gascogne, commencée en 1992, s'est achevée en 1997.
Le traitement des données bathymétriques acquises par l'Ifremer à la faveur de quatre campagnes à la mer essentiellement focalisées sur la pente continentale et le bassin profond, ainsi que l'assemblage avec les données sur le plateau continental fournies par le Shom, ont permis la réalisation d'un ensemble de cartes bathymétriques à l'échelle du 1/250 000. Ce travail, complété par le traitement des données de réflectivité des fonds marins (deux cartes au 1/500 000), permet une vision inédite du domaine maritime français sur la façade atlantique.
La pente continentale apparaît ainsi de morphologie complexe, parcourue de nombreux canyons organisés en grands bassins versants par lesquels les sédiments d'origine gravitaire transitent vers le bassin profond ; ceux-ci s'y déposent en constituant des éventails détritiques plus ou moins vastes dont le plus important, l'Eventail Profond Armoricain, couvre une superficie supérieure à celle de la Bretagne.

Bathymetric synthesis and acoustic imagery Exclusive Economic Zone, North-East Atlantic
The exploration of the french Exclusive Economique Zone (EEZ) of the Bay of Biscay has been completed between 1992 and 1997.
The processing of the bathymetric data collected by Ifremer during four cruises mainly focused on the continental slope and the deep basin, as well as the data provided by Shom on the continental plateau, allowed the achievement of a series of six bathymetric maps at 1:250,000 scale. This work, completed by the processing of the sea-bottom reflectivity (two maps at 1:500,000 scale), provide an original view of the french maritime domain in the North Eastern Atlantic.
The continental slope is characterized by a complex morphology with numerous canyons distributed in several drainage basins along which gravity sediments flow towards the deep basin. These sediments constitute deep-sea fans, the most important of which, the Armorican Deep-Sea Fan, is more than 30,000 km2 large.
