Quatrième de couverture

Overlooking the river Maine, the Château d'Angers was built on a site previously occupied by Neolithic and Gallo-Roman structures. The chateau inter-weaves two architectural elements : the fortress of Louis IX, with its huge towers and massive ramparts, and the courtly chateau of the Anjou dynasties, with its elegant buildings and pleasant gardens. A purpose-built 1950s gallery houses the renowned Apocalypse tapestry commissioned in the late 14th century by Louis I, duke of Anjou, and inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2023.

The « Itinéraires » series, designed as guides for cultural tourism, invites visitors to discover the highways and byways of France's national heritage.
