On a pu, très justement, se demander ce qu'il allait advenir du mouvement Beat, si le ticket explosif de William S. Burroughs et de ses amis Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti et Claude Pélieu... n'avait servi que pour un aller simple en enfer. Heureusement, il n'en est rien. Le battement originel est toujours aussi fort dans l'expansion de l'univers poétique et contestataire. Sur les traces des Grands Aînés, apparaissent de nouvelles galaxies, de nouveaux enfants bien décidés à porter haut le flambeau de la poésie, de la critique et de l'Histoire de ce monde. Voici donc une Anthologie qui a le mérite de faire le point sur le passé, le présent, mais aussi et surtout sur l'avenir de ce que l'on a pu appeler la Seconde Renaissance poétique de San Francisco grâce à l'émergeance d'une Génération de Baby Beats. Que l'on se rassure donc, l'étoile Beat brille encore, et pour longtemps, de tous ses feux.
One wonders what would have become of the Beat movement, if the explosive journey of William S. Burroughs and his friends Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Claude Pélieu..., had been used, simply, as a one-way ticket to hell. Fortunately, this was not the case. The original beat (rhythm, blow) always seems the loudest in the expansion of the poetic and anti-authoritarian universe. However, on the heels of their elders, appear bright new galaxies, new children committed to carrying high the torch of poetry, as well as the criticism and the history of the world. Here, then, is an anthology which has the capacity to not only look back into the past, but to speak for the present and to predict the future of what has been called the 2nd San Francisco Renaissance, due largely to the emergence of a generation of Baby Beats. From this next generation, we can rest assured that the Beat star will shine brightly for a long time to come.
