The Encyclopedia of French Tanks and Armoured Vehicles

1914-1940

The Tank, a weapon which would revolutionize warfare, was created in France almost exactly at the same time as in Britain, to meet the same tactical need. And even before the first tanks were built, it was in France, at the turn of the 20th Century, that the very first proper machinegun car with partial armour appeared.

This complete illustrated directory details 100 main French armoured fighting vehicles (tanks and armoured cars) plus 285 variants (personnel carriers, bridgelayers, mine-clearing tanks etc) as well as prototypes and projects, offering a comprehensive coverage of all French armoured vehicles from before the Great War to the Blitzkrieg period.

The text accompanying the illustrations is concise and informative, the various lines of AFV development are laid out as Généalogie Tables, data files describe in detail each main type, and this directory is richly illustrated with rare contemporary photos, plus a wealth of colour profiles published to a constant scale, together forming the ultimate reference work on the subject.

Biographie

François Vauvillier, born in 1951, living in Paris, has dedicated his entire career to the publishing of specialist works on military history. Founder of the publishing house Histoire et Collections, in 1984, creator of Militaria Magazine and several other titles, he first concentrated on research into the vast topic of French Army uniforms of the first half of the 20th century. After having published several in-depth studies on this subject, he widened his field of research to encompass the history of mechanization.
Based on his findings, in 1992 he published L'Automobile sous l'Uniforme 1939-1940, the starting point for several subsequent volumes dealing with the armoured vehicles and the motorized elements of the French Army.
Since 2006 he has produced the influential quarterly magazine GBM (Guerre, Blindés et Matériel).
This comprehensive Encyclopedia of French Tanks and Armoured Vehicles 1914-1940 is the latest work to profit from his extensive research.
