Quatrième de couverture

The history of the Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne dates back to Dijon's first enclosure wall, built in the 3rd century AD. The centre of the Burgundian capital, the building was the residence of the dukes of Burgundy until 1477, then that of the king and the governors who represented him in the province. From 1681 it has also been home to the assemblies of the States of Burgundy, the offices of the deputies, and, in 1787, the art school and its museum. The palace was nationalised during the French Revolution and has housed the town hall since 1831. Its buildings bear witness to this long history, striking an incredible balance between the diversity of the wings built in the 14th to 19th centuries, and the classical regularity imposed in the late 17th century by Jules Hardouin-Mansart's plans.

The « Itinéraires » series, designed as a guide for cultural tourism, invites the visitor to discover the highroads and byways of France's national heritage.
