À l'aube des années 2000, Thomas Labarthe découvre Jean Dubuffet au Centre Pompidou. Cette rencontre posthume, à travers une rétrospective, constitue alors pour lui « un véritable électrochoc, mais aussi un révélateur ». Trois mois plus tard, le jeune homme peint Mala Bestia, sa première toile. « Cette toile vaut pour son premier élan de liberté, j'avais l'impression d'avoir trouvé quelque chose qui, finalement, m'appartenait. La peinture a alors pris le dessus sur tout le reste. C'était une évidence, je l'ai senti d'instinct. Peindre, je pouvais le faire. »
Depuis, Toma-L peint à l'instinct, librement, en marge de tout concept, concentré sur ses tripes et son geste. Personnages dissipés, lignes et formes sous tension, le peintre a fait émerger un petit peuple agité, turbulent, charbonné sur papier ou sur toile. Installations en Tunisie, projets d'édition débridés menés à Marseille, lithographies charbonnées en autodidacte ou expositions pulsionnelles... Avec cette première monographie, l'artiste Toma-L et l'auteur Théophile Pillault reviennent ensemble sur deux décennies de création brute et débridée.
At the dawn of the new millennium, Thomas Labarthe discovered Jean Dubuffet at the Pompidou Centre. This posthumous encounter, through a retrospective, was like an electric shock, but also a revelation. Three months later, the young Labarthe painted Mala Bestia, his first canvas. The value of this painting was that it was so freeing. I felt as though I'd at last found something that belonged to me. Painting became more important than anything else. It was obvious ; I felt it instinctively. Painting was something I could do.
Since then, Toma-L has been painting intuitively, freely, on the fringes of convention, concentrating on his gut and his technique. With dissolute figures and tense lines and shapes, the painter has created a world of small, restless, turbulent people, drawn in charcoal on paper or canvas. From installations in Tunisia and frenetic book projects in Marseille to self-taught charcoal lithographs and his impulsive exhibitions : in this first monograph, the artist Toma-L and author Théophile Pillault review two decades of raw, unbridled creativity.
