Un journal italo-islamique à la veille de la Première Guerre mondiale

Lancé au Caire en 1904, Il Convito /النادي fut un journal hors du commun. Rédigé pour moitié en italien, pour moitié en arabe, ce périodique bilingue, enrichi ponctuellement de pages en turc, entendait oeuvrer au rapprochement des civilisations d'« Orient » et d'« Occident ». Son programme : offrir aux Italiens une meilleure connaissance de l'Islam- notamment du soufisme -, tout en proposant une nouvelle lecture de l'actualité politique méditerranéenne, adoptant le point de vue des peuples arabes. Journal militant, visionnaire, pacifiste, anti-impérialiste, nourri de spiritualité, Il Convito /النادي connut une quarantaine de numéros et fut largement distribué, avant que l'invasion de la Libye par l'Italie, puis la Première Guerre mondiale, ne réduisent ses projets à néant. Notre étude voudrait poser un regard global sur ce périodique oublié, en éclairant ses ambitions et ses réseaux, mais également le rôle de ses fondateurs, l'Italien Enrico Insabato et le Suédois Ivan Aguéli : deux Européens engagés dans un grand projet d'alliance « italo-islamique », en des années décisives pour l'histoire politique du Proche-Orient.

Launched in Cairo in 1904, Il Convito / النادي was an unusual newspaper. Written half in Italian and half in Arabic, this bilingual periodical, with occasional pages in Turkish, aimed to bring together the civilisations of « East » and « West ». Its aspiration was to give Italians a better understanding of Islam - and Sufism in particular - while offering a new reading of Mediterranean politics from the point of view of the Arab peoples. A militant, visionary, pacifist, anti-imperialist and spiritual journal, Il Convito/ النادي ran for forty issues and was widely distributed, before Italy's invasion of Libya and then the First World War brought its plans to an end. Our study seeks to take a global look at this forgotten periodical, shedding light on its ambitions and networks, but also on the role of its founders, the Italian Enrico Insabato and the Swede Ivan Agueli : two Europeans committed to major « Italian-Islamic » alliance, in years that were decisive for the political history of the Near East.
